Professor Philip OgdenIn recognition of his role played in developing the close partnership between the University of London Institute in Paris and Queen Mary University of London, we are delighted to announce that the QMUL-ULIP Paris Lecture will henceforth be given in honour of Philip Ogden, Emeritus Professor of Geography. Professor Ogden served as Senior Vice Principal of Queen Mary from 2005 to 2011, during which time ULIP and QMUL laid the foundations for future collaborations. He was previously Vice Principal for the Humanities and Social Sciences (1998-2006) and Head of Geography (1992-6).

Professor’s Ogden’s research interests also intersect closely with the focus of work at the Institute, particularly demographic change and migration. He has published widely on French rural society and residential patterns in European cities. His work has been an inspiration for colleagues working in urban history, geographies of daily life and migration studies, all of which are strongly reflected in key aspects of the ULIP-QMUL partnership in Paris. He also has an interest in higher education policy, particularly with respect to university building development for teaching and research. He was recently part of a research team on 'Learning Landscapes in Higher Education' funded by HEFCE and oversaw the development of the Graduate Centre at Queen Mary. In 2015, he was elected Chair of the UK Higher Education Design Quality Forum, which brings together universities, architects and other professionals.

The Philip Ogden Paris Lecture will be an annual event to open the academic year at the Institute with a major contribution in Franco-British academic exchange, offering colleagues, students and friends of the Institute and Queen Mary University of London the opportunity to engage with new work across disciplinary and national frontiers.
