Trump the Law ? Presidential Power and the Politics of Immigration
Professor Amanda Frost will discuss the scope and limits of the U.S. president’s power over immigration policy. In particular, she will discuss President Trump’s efforts to implement radical executive orders mandating the construction of a border wall, hiring thousands of new deportation officers, barring the entry by citizens of several predominantly Muslim countries and all refugees, and ramping up deportations. Professor Frost will discuss how courts have checked the President’s efforts to reshape immigration law unilaterally, and will likely continue to do so.
Her talk will be followed by two commentators. Professor Engin Isin, Professor in International Politics, Queen Mary University of London and University of London Institute in Paris, will look at the politics of immigration more globally, and Professor Etienne Pataut, Sorbonne Law School, will provide a comparative perspective on immigration law in the European Union.
The debate will be moderated by Professor Maxi Scherer, Queen Mary University of London, Director of Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS) Paris.
